Mantrapping for Sport and Profit
March 2002
Released: 2001, Tortuga Recordings
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

The best damn kick-ass mountain-man groove rock band around. That’s all you really need to know about Scissorfight. Crashing out of New England in the mid-90s, Scissorfight have been caving heads ever since. This disc is their fifth crusher, and second for Tortuga Recordings. I first heard about these guys in Metal Maniacs magazine back in ’98 when the released their third disc, BALLS DEEP (such a cool name!) but they sorta fell off my radar after that. No matter. MfSaP is out now and the time is right for the world to embrace this monster of a band.

“Acid for Blood” starts the disc off with crashing riffs and low-tuned grooves. Beast-man Ironlung’s vocals stomp all over the song as he screams “more, more, more of those pills!”. Guitarist “Geezum” Crow wrings some awesome riffage out of his guitar and often makes himself the star of the album. Songs like “Deliver the Yankee Coffin” and “Blizzards, Buzzards, and Bastards” have his heavy-handed stamp all over them, reminding these ears of a less weird Clutch going toe-to-toe with Black Sabbath with Hall Aflame as the guest referee. Sound nutty? It is, but it’s also goddamned good.

The real star of the show though is lead-throat Ironlung. This guy can flat out wail, but he also knows how to reign it in and vary up his voice for extra effect. Listen to him bellow on the ode to backstreet brawlin’ “New Hampshire’s Alright If You Like Fighting” or “The Most Dangerous Animal is Me” and then compare that to the more laid back “Hazard to Navigation” and you’ll see when I mean. This guy is impressive!

You want real rock? Something with more balls than the lame-ass corporate acts of today? This is your band.
