Scar Symmetry
Symmetric In Design
May 2005
Released: 2005, Metal Blade Records/Border Music
Rating: 1.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

This is a new Swedish band that was formed as late as last year when Jonas (Carnal Forge, Centinex, World Below), Henrik (Theory in Practice, Mutant, Altered Aeon), Per (Altered Aeon), Christian (Unmoored, Incapacity, Torchbearer) and Kenneth hooked up and decided to start a fresh and heavy form of catchy death metal without any boundaries whatsoever. They also wanted to mix heavy synths together with blazing/heavy guitar solos and catchy rhythms along with every style of singing known to metal.

Early in '04 they recorded a demo of the song SEEDS OF REBELLION and with that demo they landed a deal, After an intense period of songwriting the guys went into the Black Lounge Studio (Jonas own studio located in Avesta, Sweden) during the summer and started to record SYMMETRIC IN DESIGN which took about 3 months to finish.

Scar Symmtry play melodic death metal combined with industrial metal. Add to that a layer of gigantic synth, heavy guitars, clean and growling vocals, and death metal vocals. We can also find influences of both goth and 80’s heavy metal. That’s what I think the band plays but now some problems occur in the vocal department because the clean vocal singer sounds like he’s in pop band. He sounds dreadful, the band wants too much at the same time and it makes the music fall flat to the ground. Unfortunately, it doesn’t say in the bio who takes on the clean vocal parts or who plays the synth parts. The album and music contains so many different music styles that you can’t keep track of them. In a weak moment I thought that the album might grow on me for every time I’ve listened to it...but I was wrong. Scar Symmetry also has problems with keeping the intensity the album going, plus most of the material feels pretty weak and confusing.

The guys run through 12 tracks on this debut album and the material is heavy with guitars/synth and lead vocal in main focus. The vocals sound best when it’s the growling/death parts along with heavy riffing guitars. The worst scenario is when the music gets more melodic and the clean vocals take over with on-going synth play. But as a whole there’s nothing wrong with the production, it’s the song structure and material that causes the problems for this band.

The positive things about this album is that they should have credit for trying to break the music boundaries and that they’re trying to go their own way. The guys are competent musicians that really know how to play. However, Scar Symmetry’s debut feels too shattered. You should only buy this is you’re up for an musical challenge, if you're not, don’t because the album will only cause you a headache.
