Reckless Love
Animal Attraction
December 2011
Released: 2011, Universal Music Finland
Rating: 4.0/5

Last year, Reckless Love’s self titled debut made Metal Rules highly coveted Best of 2010 list. Understandably, the follow up was awaited anxiously by a lot of people, primarily to see if it would measure up to the outstanding debut. For those not in the know, Reckless Love is a Finnish retro glam/hair metal band, and a damned good one. Imagine Def Leppard’s polished hooks circa 1988 combined with Roth-Era Van Halen and you have a good idea of what you will get with Reckless Love.

ANIMAL ATTRACTION thankfully retains the sound and song-writing style of the debut, but with more maturity and attention to detail this time around. Most of the songs on the album could have justifiably been hits in 1989, particularly the Bon Jovi-esque “Born To Break Your Heart”. Singer Olli Herman continues to be a pillar for the band displaying appropriate range and confidence to carry these expectedly weak lyrics, complete with a larger than life on stage magnetism. Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of this album is that it is bouncier and in places more modern sounding than the debut, such as on “Hot” a modern/retro paradox if there ever was one.

Combined with the hard rocking hooks are many AOR sections, and the expected and respectable ballad “Fantasy”. The band employs remarkable restraint, with the guitars providing hooks and inspired solos while the rhythm section builds an unassailable foundation, simple and effective for this style of music. One of the great strengths of the band are the outstanding harmony and backing vocals that blend so seamlessly into the songs that it is easy to almost miss them. While a great rocking and fun affair, Reckless Love will not scratch any itches for heavy pummeling music nor stimulate any intellectual appraisals of the lyrics, but that should be expected in glam metal. There are a handful of great bands playing this style right now, including Steel Panther, Crash Diet and Crazy Lixx. Make sure you add Reckless Love to that list. ANIMAL ATTRACTION is rollicking good time and should be on any glam metal fan’s radar.
