Return Of The Spectral Rider
August 2017
Released: 2017, Indie
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: John Haseltine

Boston area metal maniacs Ravage are back with RETURN OF THE SPECTRAL RIDER. Well sort of. This release is a completely re-recorded version of the bands 2005 release, SPECTRAL RIDER which was originally released by German label Karthago Records. From what I read, due to the improper recording and mixing of the original, the band decided to give it another go around.

While doing a little research on the band, I see that there are many comments about this re-recording. Mainly by those whom are already familiar with Ravage and not too happy with the fact that they do not get new material. For someone like me, and maybe even those of you who have not encountered Ravage yet in your life, this is a great treat.

The band formed in the mid 90’s focused on an American melodic heavy metal sound with slight thrash influences. Maybe more speed metal than thrash, but whatever. You can have melodic thrash, one of my new favs Lost Society’s latest went that route. Ravage have stuck to their guns through the years not bowing to trends in the industry, but continued to write and play their own brand of American heavy metal. It is funny that I say American heavy metal when they draw heavily from Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween and Running Wild. None of which are American. I do hear quit a familiarity to Fifth Angel.

This album has very well crafted tracks that even though they may be over a decade old are still relevant today. A tight knit band musically powered by the vokills of Al Ravage who delivers with some serious range. Ravage is a band that may be familiar to some, but need to be heard by the rest of you out there. I have really enjoyed listening to the RETURN OF THE SPECTRAL RIDER.
