Nevermore
THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR
August 2005
Released: 2005, Century Media
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: EvilG

Nevermore continue to Never-bore it’s listeners with the release of THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR. The band also never repeats itself, but maintains a distinct identity amidst a sea of mediocrity. On the band’s previous album, ENEMIES OF REALITY, guitarist Jeff Loomis pushed the envelope with his lead guitar acrobatics to what we thought were the limits. With the addition of second lead guitarist, Steve Smyth, the ante has once again been raised.

This makes for my 4th Nevermore CD review, and my 4th 5/5 rating! My Nevermore infatuation in part stems from the band’s ability to seamlessly blend aggression and melody. The finest example of this on the new album is the openings song “Born”. The verses border on a form of prog-death/thrash but when the chorus comes in the song is taken into a much more melodic and unsuspected direction. Another of the band’s strengths lies in their ability to write ballads that are not sappy. With " Sentient 6" Warrel really gets to shine with some exceptionally haunting melodies. For those again looking for more, wait for the album’s title track...at times it’s epic, brutal, then melodic...what more could a fan of technical / progressive / power / thrash / death - metal ask for? Every song on here is a winner. Guitar freaks will be blown away by the dual performances of both Jeff and Steve. As for how Steve fits into Nevermore...many listeners, if not told, will not notice that someone new is also shredding it up. Steve’s lead playing style is not radically different from Jeff, so he fits in easily. Perhaps he adds in a little more of the thrash metal elements, after all he was hired for duty in Testament for a little while! Unlike the previous Nevermore release, THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR has perfect crystal clear sound thanks to mastermind Andy Sneap.

With no complaints from this reviewer...I’d wager that this album has a good chance of becoming album of the year at Metal-Rules.com. If not number one, then top 5 for sure. Very few releases this year have been so throughly mind-blowing from beginning to end.
