Made Of Metal
December 2010
Released: 2010, Metal God Entertainment
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Finally! Halford was really overdue. Despite having a skeleton of a catalogue, Halford really needed to put some meat on the bones of his solo career. MADE OF METAL is really only the third studio album of all new material in over 10 years. Sure the catalogue looks impressive but in reality, live albums, demo albums, EP’s, digital only live albums and novelty Christmas albums are just filler. Halford needed to deliver the goods and I’m pleased to say he is still made of Metal. The album clocks in at a whopping 14 tracks at over an hour it is his longest solo album to date.

MADE OF METAL is better than CRUCIBLE but not as good as RESURRECTION. The songs on MOM are far more accessible and dare I say enjoyable. I’ve read another review of this album and the reviewer was lambasting it saying some of the songs sound like they could have been on TURBO. That’s a good thing in my books, especially considering it was Priest’s best selling album! The songs are catchy and diverse. We get some semi-ballads, the southern flavoured ‘Matador’ the sleek and modern title track, and half a dozen straight ahead metal cuts…every song is a winner.

The song-craft is really strong, songs like ‘Fire and Ice’ as well as ‘Thunder and Lightning’ are fun and easy to sing along and stick in the brain. The slow grinder of ‘Twenty Five Years’ is dark and ominous with a dark lyrical bent. Halford really brought some of his best ideas to the table. I enjoyed the lyrics of 'Fire And Ice' since they are Heavy Metal radio, and since I am a Metal DJ (for over 11 years now) the words really spoke to me. I appreciated the fact that the Metal God himself wrote a song about enjoying Metal on the radio. That's a big endorsement for all the Metal DJ's around the world especially since many consider traditional radio a dying medium.

Halford has usual crew of experts (Roy Z., Metal Mike, Jarzombek) along for the ride and the production and performance are world-class. The packaging is good to look at, lyrics, photos and a nice layout and design are the icing on the cake. If you are curious about his solo career and haven’t checked out anything Halford since CRUCIBLE back in 2002, skip the half-dozen filler releases in the interim and get MADE OF METAL.
