Death Metal Christmas
Hellish Renditions Of Christmas Classics
Released: 2013, Indie
‘tis the season…to crank Metal! Every year around this time we review the latest Metal Christmas albums. Over the years we have reviewed about 15 or so and this year we have a couple more for your holiday listening pleasure. They are on opposite ends of the musical spectrum; HELLISH RENDITIONS OF CHRISTMAS CLASSICS (by Death Metal Christmas) and WINTER IS COMING: A HOLIDAY ROCK OPERA (by A Hero For The World). Feel free to check our reviews for both.
Undeniably the heaviest and most brutal Christmas/Metal hybrid to date, Death Metal Christmas is a fun little side project of J.J. Hrubovcak, bassist of Hate Eternal and his brother Mike, vocalist of Monstrosity. This independent project is really cool and obviously a labour of love as he did it all himself. HELLISH RENDITIONS OF CHRISTMAS CLASSICS is a short five song EP running just under 20 minutes. It could easily been longer but they were quite clever to keep it short as many other Christmas Metal projects can get really long. Next year the Death Metal Christmas project can do Part 2!
Every song is a Christmas song done in the brutal death Metal style. I had a smile a mile-wide on my face upon hearing ‘Nutcracker; Dance Of The Sugarplum Fairy’. It starts with the conventional classic, quiet intro with cello (I believe) before crushing all posers with a face-melting version like you have never heard. Let’s hear them play this in the mall! Even the song titles make me smile. They change up the song titles to match the death Metal theme, for example, ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ is now appropriately re-titled, ‘Unrest For Melancholy Men’. The sound is generally in the late 80’s, early 90’s classic slower Death Metal style such as Obituary and naturally, Monstrosity. Even the cover art matches perfectly with a bleeding Virgin Mary to stick with the evil theme.
Death Metal Christmas is really a breath of fresh winter air in the Metal/Christmas sub-genre. There are about 25 or so of these albums and most of them are Melodic Metal or in the Rock Opera style, so HELLISH RENDITIONS OF CHRISTMAS CLASSICS is unique with it’s skull-fracturingly heavy approach. The Hrubovcak brothers should put together a band and TSO should take these guys on tour as the opening act! Until that great day, put a copy of this in the stocking of every Metal fan you know!
