With a history dating back to 1991, Madrid’s Avulsed are one of Spain’s longest running death metal exports. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut EP, CARNIVORACITY, Xtreem Music have reissued and remastered the EP with a slew of bonus live tracks and some juiced up packaging for a brand new audience.

Avulsed may have racked up a pretty healthy body of work over the last two decades, but listening to CARNIVORACITY it’s pretty clear that ain’t a damn thing changed. Okay, they’ve got better production quality now and the tunes are more complex, but the nexus of gore soaked brutal death metal remains as true today as it was in 1994. Sub-guttural vocals and a wall of down tuned riffs surround the title track and the “Cradle of Bones” b-side, and their cover of Pentagram Chile’s “Demonic Possession” sticks close enough to the source material while still giving it a thorough drag across the embalming room floor. Though these tracks have supposedly been remastered, they still sound as visceral and raw as you’d expect an independent Spanish death metal EP from 1994 to sound like.

But the real treat with the CARNIVORACITY reissue is the slate of bonus live tracks that are included. Yeah, there’s a Brujeria cover, but better than that, there’s songs like “Bodily Ransack” and “Gangrene Divine Stigma” from their early demos. Admittedly, I’m a sucker for stuff like this; this is as old school underground as it gets, and as frantic and unpolished as it may be, it still holds up.

Okay, okay - So a 20-year old Avulsed reissue isn’t gonna be for everybody. BUT, if you consider yourself any kind of self-respecting death metal connoisseur, CARNIVORACITY should at least pique your interest. Physical CDs are available for purchase through Xtreem Music, but the band’s also offering digital versions for dirt cheap through their Bandcamp page (you’ll have to sift through some Facebook links to get there though).
