'Tis We
May 2014
Released: 2014, Self Released
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

This album is wackier than Gary Busey riding a Sasquatch through the enchanted forest, BUT, that’s a huge part of its charm. ‘TIS WE is the fourth full length album from Vancouver’s Doomeastvan, and trudges a delightful blend of doom/death a la Sorrow, Autopsy, and Winter with the bizzaro sensibilities that only seem to come with a Jerry Garcia sized dose of hallucinogens. Said otherwise, it’s a f@#king blast.

Superficially, Doomeastvan lays down dirty, dirgy doom riffs layered with guttural musings of all things nihilistic. But just when you think you’re about to sit through cookie cutter stoner doom album of the month #624, things get interesting. Try the stunningly simple, yet all too accurate statement of “Humans Are Bad” as it devolves into Beavis-esque cackles, or the revisionist nursery rhymes of “Buckle My Shoe” – never have the words “Hot Cross Buns” sounded so menacing. “Annihilation of the Masses” approaches almost grindcore territory before sidestepping into jazz musings, while “Cyclops” is a first person narrative of the namesake beast in Homer’s epic, and “Morbidly Obese” is both hilarious and a satirical statement of first world indulgences. But moments like the beatnik drone of “Sketches of Pain” and the honest uneasiness of “Assisted Suicide” (this track totally messed with my head) really hammer home that Doomeastvan are much more than shtick.

And the best part (wait for it…), is that ‘TIS WE is available as a name your price download via the Doomeastvan Bandcamp page, as is much of their catalog. If you’re a fan of the genre or just a metal enthusiast who enjoys their music a little left of center, ‘TIS WE is a great way to spend an hour and worthy of a few shekels. But more importantly, Doomeastvan is a crafty quartet who recognize how to stand out in a cluttered scene. Check out ‘TIS WE and check your inhibitions at the door.
