Alberta Assault! In early 2014 Calgary, Alberta will be hosting the WACKEN METAL BATTLE. This contest has regional acts perform to audiences and judges who then decide who gets to go further in the contest, with the winner getting a trip to perform at Wacken. Visit for more details. This a good a time as any to do my bi-annual, quick, regional round-up of releases from Alberta Metal bands. Even though not all of these bands may be competing in WMB, I’d like to thank the bands who provided review copies for me for my radio show and The bands are Armifera, Black Pestilence, Bloated Pig, Enemyus, Exit Strategy, Ides Of Winter, Kataplexis, Misanthropy, Scythia, Throne Of Vengeance, Trollband, Vile Insignia and Villainizer. Please feel free to check out the other reviews in this feature.

Bloated Pig are back with their new EP, BLOOD OFFERING. Over the years the band has slowly been making a name for themselves with a number of low-key, local independent releases. The power trio from Calgary, Alberta have been building a following the old fashioned way, hard work and minding their own business. BLOOD OFFERING visually matches the theme and style of their previous releases, namely dark and bloody, which sort of suits the music. Unfortunately, perhaps from a marketing perspective, the new EP doesn’t have lyrics or too much in the way of presentation but that has always been the bands style.

The EP starts on a brave note with a chugging instrumental called, ‘Starvation’ and from their the whole five song EP churns along at a slow pace, a bit of sludge, maybe not quite Doom, just plodding and thunderous. I hear a bit of the NOLA sound, things understated and rumbling with the shouted style of vocals so popular in this genre. The band does have some nice dynamics, for example the slower acoustic intro to the final cut, ‘Crawlspace’ a melancholy instrumental piece until about halfway through when it gets electri-fried. One observation…three songs start exactly the same, just a bit of feedback, giving it a loose jam type fell, plug in and go!

BLOOD OFFERING does the band name justice, it is as dense and heavy as well, a bloated pig. If dark, ominous southern sludge is your sound, you will certainly enjoy Bloated Pig.
