I Am Thor
March 2016
Released: 2016, Deadline
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

I might not have even bothered reviewing a compilation CD, such as this except as a long time fan of the mighty Thor, this record has merit. After the success of the documentary I AM THOR on the film festival circuit, it was not surprising that the DVD was not far behind. A nice bonus however that I did not expect, was the release a new Thor compilation CD, I AM THOR, the official soundtrack to the movie or better known as an OST in the music industry. This disc serves double duty as one of the better Thor compilations and/or Greatest Hits as well.

With his long and convoluted recording history there are many, many THOR compilations, well over a dozen, some more worthy than others. Many of them, such as MUTANT, THUNDERSTRYKE and ANTHOROLOGY feature many rare or unreleased songs. However, as odd as it may sound, there has never really been a good ‘Best Of’ Thor with all the hits in one place, likely due to record company politics and legalities. So to my ears I AM THOR serves not only as the OST but the first really good ‘Greatest Hits’. All the big bombers from across the ages are on here; ‘Thunderhawk’, ‘Keep The Dogs Away’, ‘Anger’, and of course ‘Let The Blood Run Red’.

Normally ‘Greatest Hit’s compilations are churned out by record companies as contractual obligations and/or cash grabs and usually are pure unadulterated crap only to be tolerated when there is unreleased bonus stuff. I AM THOR is the perfect blend of cool rare stuff and the big hits from across his epic career. The CD itself is very nice, it comes with a colour 10-page booklet with lots of photos from the movie as well as some decent liner notes and bios.

If you are new to the majesty and glory of the mighty Thor this would be a great place to start your collection before diving headlong into the 20+ album catalogue. On the flip side there is enough new, rare, weird (ie. ‘Crunch, Crunch, Yum, Yum’) to make it collectible for long time Thor fans.
