Pica Fierce
Reptile (demo)
August 2004
Released: 2004, Independent
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Aryn

Wow is all I have to say about this. For a band that is just recording demos and has yet to even release a full length these guys have it amazingly well together. Pica Fierce play disarmingly technical death metal that never becomes contrived or boring and manages to stay interesting throughout. Even though this is just a three song demo it has enough riffs and sheer songwriting talent to fill several full length albums of lesser artists. From the opening strains of “Decadence” you are caught in a web that can’t be escaped, it starts off with some great free-form guitar work and becomes an incredible piece of technical/progressive death metal with enough time changes and odd breakdowns to leave you discombobulated. The guitar work of Oystein Haltbakk and Kjetil Dyrnes is nothing short of mastery, and the bass work of Hallgeir Kjono goes places that no other death metal bassists are usually willing to go. Then there’s the godly drumming of Eirik Roksvag who plays with the technique of Neil Pert and all the speed and fury of Gene Hoglan. There are only three tracks in this demo and that is my primary complaint, there’s just not enough Pica Fierce to enjoy! Highlights include the entire damn thing. This is thinking mans death metal for the open minded and adventurous but once you get it in your head it will not leave. Highly recommended!
