Marionette is a Swedish act that was formed 2005 by bass player Medin who felt he wanted to start something new and fresh. Marionette entered several music contents and went pretty far in most of them. They have recorded a few demos and now the band has finally closed a deal with Listenable Records.

This six piece act is very influenced by the Japanese visual-kei bands as well as the brutality of Swedish hardcore and metal music. To me their music sounds most like melodic death metal with the infamous Gothenburg sound. The songs incorporate power, aggression and speed and most of the songs have a really high tempo. Keyboards are used quite heavily and singer Widén varies in between singing in an ordinary style and a more aggressive/angry death metal style.

SPITE clocks in on about 45 minutes and during that time has 12 songs been run through. This album is a pretty standard one. It is one of those albums that contains pretty good material and good musicians. The problem is that nothing much really happens. In Marionette’s case I think that the band hasn’t developed their own identity at all. They are a carbon copy of other more successful acts in this genre. I’m convinced that the guys can take this a step further but to do that they have to add more confidence and originality into their music.

The production by Simon Exner and Christian Silver from Sonic Syndicate is also standard. It’s good but again, nothing is out of the ordinary. Marionette has the tools to get somewhere but they haven’t learnt how to use them yet. The bands bio closes with the words “This debut album will turn the metal world upside down”. No, it won’t. It will maybe rock it a little but not more. If Marionette can’t deliver stronger material in the future they soon will be forgotten.
