Fear No Man
Released: 2001, Leviathan Records
ZANISTER = Sophisticated Intensity. This is one of the new breed of American powermetal bands which consists of guitar greats David T. Chastian and Michael Harris, Brian Sarvela (ex The Reign of Terror) on vocals, Brian Harris: drums and James Martin on bass. I had been trying to get a hold of Zanisters last Cd SYMPHONICA MILLENNIA to review as I had heard a few tracks and was greatly impressed. I could not get it but I now have in my hands Zanister’s latest release FEAR NO MAN. After spinning this CD a dozen times I have to say that I am impressed. Zanister play a potent blend of gritty powermetal and straight ahead classic metal that will appeal to anyone who likes great music.
Let me say this before I even get into the songs. The tunes on this disc are much better than the ones that I had heard from Zanister’s last CD. Thats saying something. Those were great tunes but the guys have outdone themselves. I expected nothing less from two greats like Harris and Chastain. "The Shades They Color Thee" kicks of the CD with a crunching scorcher that sets the pace for the whole disc. These guys want to show right from the start that they mean business. The bass pounding "Live For Greed" is up next and conveys the message that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The solo in this tune absolutely rips. I don’t know who played it but I expect nothing less from these two guitar wizards. "Word of Fate" is a straight ahead double bass drum pounder while the title track is a ripper with a twist. About half way through the song breaks down for a quiet interlude, where the guitar, bass and drums are almost jazzy, before it kicks into the original pounding riff with some awesome twin leads. Powerful track.
I can’t say enough about Brian Sarvela’s vocals on this CD. He was an integral part of the creation of the music this time around in contrast to the last CD where he came in when the songs had already been written. Therefore he seems to fit the songs like a glove. For those who say metal is dead in the United States, I say... CHECK OUT ZANISTER!!!!!! http://www.zanister.com
