The band leader and front man for Sweden’s Zan Clan, is Zinny Zan. Zinny started out back in the 80’s in the glam/sleaze rock’n’roll band Easy Action. Easy Action along with Hanoi Rocks were way ahead of their time when they started to play sleaze and glam, a genre that earned enormous success a few years later. After Easy Action Zinny moved on to the band Kingpin but they were forced to change name ‘cause it was already taken and Kingpin’s new name became the well known Shotgun Messiah. With Zinny behind the mic, they landed Shotgun Messiah a spot on the billboard chart with over 500,000 album sold only in the US alone.
Shortly after the debut album with Shotgun Messiah, Zinny left the band and in the beginning of the 90’s he formed his own band Zan Clan. Zan Clan’s debut CITIZEN OF WASTELAND came 1994 but it disappeared in the flood of albums released and nothing much really happened. Today, there are no original members left besides Zinny. In today’s Zan Clan, the other musicians are experienced guys that have played with Talisman, Great King Rat, and Lion’s Share to mention a few.
Without any album as a back up, Zan Clan has done a few shows as support act to Whitesnake and Queensryche in Sweden. It looks like the audiences out there are getting tired of the power metal boom we had some years ago and are now more interested in glam/sleaze rock instead, so much so that I think that this glam/sleaze sound may have a second revival in the near future. If I should draw some musical parallels with other bands that sound like Zan Clan, I’d mention Poison, Hanoi Rocks, Cinderella, early Motley Crue and Guns ‘n’ Roses.
This second album from the Zan Clan are on 12 tracks and there’s also a bonus cover of the Cheap Trick song “Surrender” and an outro on about 1,30. The album contains well played, simple, but sweaty 80’s glam/sleaze rock’n’roll. Zinny doesn’t show any signs of tiredness in is voice, he sounds just as good as he did back in the 80’s/90’s, Zinny IS glam/sleaze!
All of the musicians are brilliant with what they do and you can hear that they have a lot of experience…Zinny sure leads a very stable Clan today.
The album, with the long title, was recorded in Platform Studio and NMW Studio in Stockholm Sweden by Chris Laney and co-produced by the band. The production oozes sweaty/dirty/glam/sleaze hard rock and it lacks none of the important elements that make it a brilliant production.
I’m old enough to have experienced both Easy Action and Hanoi Rocks as well as when the big explosion of glam/sleaze came with acts like Poison, Cinderella and Mötley Crue and of course do I love this album. I’m a big fan of this genre since years back and I can’t say anything negative about Zan Clan’s new album. It’s going to rotate heavily in my CD player!
Zan Clan have brought us the perfect soundtrack for the summer and this album is a given party starter. I recommend this strongly to any fellow sleaze/glam fan like myself.
