Zephaniah
Stories From The Book Of Metal
February 2015
Released: 2008, Indie
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Indianna, that hotbed of Power Metal, did churn out a cool band about ten years ago, by the name Zephaniah. They released a single album in 2008 and then called it quits. Recently the band has reunited or reformed and reissued their debut. I missed it the first time around but I’m very glad to have a second chance to enjoy this excellent record.

I had no idea what Zephaniah meant but a handy-dandy internet search reveals it to be an ancient name and one associated with a few biblical (Old Testament) characters. I like it!

STORIES FROM THE BOOK OF METAL is a pretty cool album. The band has a very European sound (If there is such a thing) but play a type of Speedy Power Metal with symphonic and progressive elements. The songs are well-written but not too progressive and elaborate, most of them run in the 5-7 minute range, making them interesting and taking them out of the standard verse, chorus, verse chorus style of writing. The thing I like this is how they pushed the speed and intense guitar playing to the front. This album is very guitar-oriented, very fast, very flashy and lots of solos just the way I like it.

The long opening track is an epic instrumental song that sets the tone for the album to come and near the back-end of the song, majestic and glorious narration, reminiscent of Manowar perhaps, (that is a good thing!) kicks in to launch the album proper. The lyrics tell tales of battles, dragons, pirates and warriors, swords and kings and other classic Metal topics and are righteously delivered by singer Logan who brings these stories to life with an enthusiastic and energetic performance. He is ably backed by some good gang vocals. There are a few brief interludes as well some acoustic piano to add to the tone and atmosphere of the album. There are some great moments of keyboard and guitar interplay. STORIES FROM THE BOOK OF METAL demonstrates that these five young dudes know the way of true Metal with a superbly entertaining debut.

The band has a membership overhaul since this album came out and we can expect newly recorded material with the new members in the near future. You can expect the original pressing of this gem to be a treasure for those who were lucky enough to get one. I’m really looking forward to hearing the new album REFORGED later this year.
