Zero Down
No Limit To The Evil
December 2014
Released: 2014, Minotauro Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Christmas has come early for me this year! The Zero Down boys are back with a new album, just in time to make it a Heavy Metal Holiday Season. For those not in the know, well, shame on you. Kidding aside, here’s a quick rundown on Zero Down: The band hails from Seattle, has been active since 2002, and have three previous releases to their credit. All of the band’s albums kick ass and are worth your time, with my personal favorite being 2008’s GOOD TIMES AT THE GATES OF HELL. I’ve reviewed each of the guys’ albums for Metal Rules and love ‘em all so when this one appeared in my Inbox I felt like someone had sent me a present.

One glance at the cover art and I knew this was going to be awesome, as the band has returned to the style of their 2008 opus, featuring their unofficial evil/crazy old man mascot. On into the music and the band proves that feeling right, because this record is slam-packed full of Zero Down’s patented careening, barely-on-the-rails heavy metal, topped off by Hawk’s charismatic vocals. To my ears, no band rips it up with such barely controlled enthusiasm. Dig a little deeper though, and you find that the guys have (slightly) tempered their music with a strong NWOBHM melodic ethic that has always been in there but is even more prevalent here, particularly in the guitar lines. Opening cut “Return of the Godz” has riffs right out of the ‘70s/early ‘80s Judas Priest mold and that influence continues for the rest of the nine tracks. Back to the guitar for a minute, and I have to call out the excellent work of Lenny Burnett and Mark Fox who both provide constant enjoyment throughout the album with their blazing riffs/solos/twin leads. The guitar work has always been a highlight of Zero Down’s music, and this album is no exception.

As immediately satisfying as the album is, I keep picking up on cool new riffs/vocals/lyrics each time I listen. NO LIMIT TO THE EVIL is the most effortlessly enjoyable album I’ve heard this year and another triumph for Zero Down so if you haven’t gotten down in the dirt with these guys yet, there is no better time than now.
