While Greece based, Wardrum are not a household name in the land of heavy/power metal, they have been around since 2010, with SPADEWORK (2011). MESSENGER is their widely considered high-watermark. A solid mix of power/heavy metal that, at times, bears to mind great elements of other big heavy/power metal band, Iced Earth, Edguy and Angra. MESSENGER can easily eclipse their debut.

The opener ‘Shelter’ is a song that introduces us to the world of Wardrum kingdom, with up-tempo tunes and a huge melodic power metal chorus. Next, the title track is an Iced Earth-flavored anthem with Yannis Papadopoulos showing his strong voice and squeals. The mid-tempo ‘Lady Jane Grey’, with its rhythmical riffing and the incredibly incredible chorus is one of the most anticipated moments of this record. Songs like the speedy ‘After Forever’, ‘Oceans’, the theatrical ‘Vengeance’ and the ballad ‘Broken’ are another highlights of this great album together with Kosta Vreto’s classical guitar solos, the steady bass tunes of Kostas Scandalis and the major drum hits of Stergios Kourou.

Admirably, the drive and perseverance and by the significant tougher and heavier sound, I think they will be around for a long time, and they have to. Greece seems to be an inexhaustible source of interesting bands like ‘Wardrum’. And what is striking is that it is not restricted anymore to the well-known black metal (Rotting Christ, Septicflesh, Nightfall) but that other genres are well represented as well in this country. Wardrum is a heavy/power metal band of the purest and must therefore appeal to fans of Angra, Theocracy, Iced Earth and Crimson Glory. A good singer, a lot of galloping riffs, pounding bass drums and the necessary –at times- keyboard and guitar duels.

To sum up, MESSENGER is a bombastic and brilliant piece of heavy/power metal coming out of Greece that writes a chapter in Greek metal history.
