There was quite a bit of buzz going around this new Canadian band last year. They made a big impression in 2001 with the release of their self-titled demo, and finally managed to follow that up last year with this, their debut full-length. I know I’m pretty late getting to it, but better late than never – especially with a debut album this good!

Right off the bat, it’s obvious that Warmachine don’t do anything too different from their competition – this is pure traditional melodic metal/power metal all the way, packed full of catchy melodies and tasteful solos. Each member ably holds down their end of the bargain, though the guys that recoded this disc are now gone, replaced by new members (listed at right). Only vocalist Joe DiTaranto remains, which is a good thing as it is his voice that listeners will identify with. This disc is also packed with guests, featuring the likes of David Ellefson, Harry Hess (Harem Scarem), Sean Gregory (Bob Catley), Mike Dmitrovic (Bob Catley), and Ralph Santolla (Iced Earth, Death, Deicide, etc.).

Even with the impressive guest list, it is the high-quality songwriting that sets Warmachine above the rest. Sure, this type of metal is supposed to be catchy, but damn if some of these songs don’t bury deep into the brain. I’ve been singing “Eternally” (my personal favorite track) and “Beginning of the End” for weeks!

Ultimately, THE BEGINNING OF THE END is an excellent first step for Warmachine, and a damn fine album to boot. Whether you’ve got room for another classic metal album or not, you should definitely do yourself a favour and check this band out!
