Despite long ago outliving its usefulness, the metalcore genre persists, continuously unleashing countless bands to clog our ears and airwaves. Mind you, if metalcore’s predecessor genre (melodic death metal) also continues to press on, why can’t it? Anyway, one of the newer, lesser known metalcore bands is With Passion. Formed in 2002, the band has put out one previous full-length (IN THE MIDST OF BLOODIED SOIL) and an EP. If you’re really curious, I suggest checking out Lord of the Wasteland’s reviews of this band for further info and a more in-depth look at the ins and outs of this disc. Why? Well, besides the fact that the Lord is a damn fine writer, I am not willing to put much more effort into this album than I already have.
WHAT WE SEE WHEN WE SHUT OUR EYES is nothing more than standard metalcore mixed with the occasional tech and skronk of Dillinger Escape Plan thrown in for…fun? I don’t know. Anyway, the guys obviously know their way around their instruments but the never lock into one of their many good riffs long enough to enjoy it before wrecking it with some misguided wankery. Yawn. What’s worse is that Fidel Campos’ vocals have absolutely no distinguishing features at all. He’s your standard metalcore screamer, start to finish. This is actually one of those times where some well-chosen clean vocals would really help to break up the monotony of the music.
By now it’s painfully obvious that these types of bands are not going to go away, despite curmudgeons like me hacking away at them, so I guess all I can do is warn listeners away with the following standard: Metalcore fans will love this. Everyone else, stay away – far away.
Note: the noted score includes an extra half-point given for naming a song after The Thing’s main character. What a fucking great movie that is.
