The Divination Of Antiquity
October 2014
Released: 2014, Candlelight Records
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

British Black Metal champions Winterfylleth have returned with "The Divination Of Antiquity", their fourth album, and it is no exaggeration to state that it is one of the finest extreme metal album ever produced.

The album opens with the folk-laden ferocity of the title track, then keeps the standards high with "Whisper Of The Elements", which perfectly captures the heathen back-to-nature ethos of Black metal, rather than the in-your-face Satanism and oft-cartoonish blasphemy of some of their contemporaries. The album proceeds with "Warrior Herd", its magnetic melody conjuring images of windswept hillsides, and the awesome majesty of "A Careworn Heart" and the blistering "Foundations Of Ash" (which contains a phenomenal riff at the songs midpoint).

The pacing and flow of the album is superb, as evidenced by haunting instrumental interlude "The World Ahead", which leads into "Over Borderlands" with its sumptuous riffing and spine tingling, sometimes aching melodies.

This wondrously epic journey is concluded by the crystaline fragility of "Forsaken In Stone", an exalted exercise in restraint and dynamics.

The CD digipak version of the album contains a bonus track: "Pariah's Path", a snarling maelstrom of unbound anger.

"The Divination Of Antiquity" shows Winterfylleth to be at the absolute peak of the powers. It is their finest album to date. All of the element blend together magnificently, from the truly inspired lead guitar to the haunting chants that pervade many of the songs. It manages to be both sombre and extraordinarily uplifting at the same time. One the the best releases of this or any other year.
