Life's Blood
December 2011
Released: 2011, Pure Steel Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

North Carolina’s Widow made quite an impression back in 2007 with their third album, NIGHTLIFE. That album was chock full of ‘80s metal goodness, albeit tainted a bit with unnecessary harsh vocals. Still, the riffs and overt passion for the music were infectious as hell, earning the band many followers. And then...nothing. It’s been a long four years, but Widow are finally back, new album, LIFE’S BLOOD in tow.

One listen to opening salvo “Lady Twilight” confirms that Widow has not lost any of their exuberance, nor their love of all things ‘80s metallic. Indeed, the band is still at their best when careening with barely restrained energy, as seen in just about every song on the album. Sure, they slow it down occasionally, as on “In Dreams” and “Another Fallen Angel”, but even these slight detours are contagious. I’d even go so far as to say there’s not a single song on the album that isn’t enjoyable – the hooks, the twin leads and solos, the sheer craft behind the songs...there’s just something about this band that kicks ass and strikes the right party-loving mood without venturing into irony. I mean, there is absolutely nothing on LIFE’S BLOOD that wasn’t originally done 25 years ago, but damn it all, I love it anyway – maybe nostalgia is creeping in during my old age? Nah, Widow is just that damn good.

Nostalgia or no, I’m fully on board with these guys, and I know I’m not the only one. Despite my enthusiasm for the music, I can’t give it the full 5/5 treatment because I know I have some rose-coloured glasses on when it comes to ‘80s metal, but never mind that – just go and listen to this life-affirming album!
