Winds
Reflections of the I
April 2002
Released: 2002, The End Records
Rating: 4.2/5
Reviewer: Cid

When I first heard who Winds was formed by I thought “great, another super band” and then I thought about Dimension Zero and I was ready to be disappointed because members and ex-members of Arcturus, Mayhem, Marduk and Khold sounded like a juggernaut of a band that would most likely disappoint anyone because of the high expectations their banding together generates.

I love it when I’m wrong (well not really but when it comes to this kind of examples I am)! Winds is not only far from disappointing, it’s an incredible set of musicians back up by an entire section of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and delivering something that I can only describe as ear-candy.

Reflections of the I is a brilliantly put together piece of mid-tempo-ed metal that is back by strings in a classical manner that only a true genius could conceive. I am floored over and over again by the ease with which the orchestral section mixes with the rest of the music to form an unique sound that will certainly catch the ear of more than one metalhead I know.

The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a CD that will deliver blast beats or 2863459345 miles an hour shredding sections then you’re not going to find it in here. But if you’re looking for a very mature and creative display of excellent music you can be perfectly sure that this masterpiece will be a valuable asset in your CD collection.
