Live In The Still Of The Night (DVD)
April 2006
Released: 2006, AFM Records/Sound Pollution
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

After David Coverdale put Whitesnake on ice during the late 90’s he released a solo album that didn’t do so well. He reunited Whitesnake once again in 2004 and it’s from one of the shows they did in Europethat this DVD is taken. But to call this Whitesnake is a bit misleading because it’s only Mr. Coverdale that’s left from the original line-up, instead of calling it Whitesnake it’s more proper to call it David Coverdale’s Whitesnake.

The show was recorded at Hammersmith Apollo in London and just as myself the main category of people in the audience are people on 30+. David Coverdale is in great shape and runs around on stage effortlessly during the whole 110 minutes long gig. All of you who have seen the stage at this venue knows that it’s huge, there isn’t a lot of things on stage except for the musicians amplifiers, a big backdrop and Tommy Aldridge’s big drumset. The hardest working man on stage is of course Mr. Coverdale but Marco Mendoza isn’t far behind.

The “new” Whitesnake does all the old classic songs justice but that’s no surprise with thought of the experience amongst these guys. The only thing that’s different from how the songs sounds originally is the more rawer sound these guys brings out to show. A few of the classic tracks they play this evening are “Bad Boys”, “Love Ain’t No Stranger”, “Ready and Willing”, “Crying In The Rain”, “No Love In The Heart Of The City” and “Still Of The Night”. The show opens with the Deep Purple song “Burn” before the Whitesnake material takes over. The sound is brilliant and the same goes for the lights. Besides Mr. Coverdale both Doug Aldrich and Tommy Aldridge have their time in the spotlight with each solo. Mr. Aldridge’s solo comes in the middle of “Crying In The Rain” and after that Mr. Coverdale introduces the band.

After the ordinary playing time is over the encores kick off with “Take Me With You” and “Still Of The Night”. The camera work is amazing, a total amount of 26 cameras keep an eye on every move Mr. Coverdale does, it’s all taped in diverse funny angles and longer sweep takes on the audience. As bonus features there are interviews, behind the scene footages plus other stuff and if you’re real fast you can buy the limited edition of the DVD that also includes a bonus live CD.

This is an excellent DVD that every Whitesnake fan is going to love and even if it’s not the original line up it’s fun to hear the old classics songs again that brings up many memories. If you rather catch the band live don’t miss the 2006 tour.
