Rise of the Empress
Released: 2014, Peaceville Records

‘Rise of the Empress’ is the debut album by White Empress. Created by former Cradle Of Filth guitarist Paul Allender, the band are based in the USA. Vocals are performed by former Luna Mortis front woman Mary Zimmer. The rest of the band is comprised of musicians all with notable experience; the bassist is Chela Harper from Coal Chamber, guitarist Jeremy Kohnmann has played with darkwave band The Awakening and drummer Zac Morris has played with many bands including Ugly Kid Joe. The album was mixed and mastered by veteran producer, Kit Woolven (Thin Lizzy, Cradle Of Filth).
It’s not surprising that with the credentials above the crowd sourcing for the album raised 155% of the goal; however fans of Allender’s most famous band may be disappointed by what they got for their money, if they were expecting a full out extreme metal creation. On the flip side those who dislike CoF should definitely not be put off by the association with Allenders former project. ‘Rise of the Empress’ is on the heavy side with relentless guitars and is definitely ‘metal’ but there is none of the full out screaming or cheesiness of Mister Filth and co. Mary’s vocals range from operatic to death metal screams and the music is just as diverse; diving from symphonic to industrial keyboard sounds in places.
If you were to check out just one song from this album it should be ‘Darkness Encroaching’ which best showcases the range of sounds used in this album. Once you get your head around the mishmash of styles this album becomes a grower. Any fan of the projects the members have previously worked on should give this a listen. There is a lot here and something more any fan of quality metal.
