Enjoy of Deep Sadness
August 2014
Released: Augu, Moribund Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: UK Team

I’ve never been a big fan of Depressive Suicidal Black Metal, but when a band uses a various range of instrumentation and arrangements and doesn’t release an album consisting of 30 minutes pointless sobbing, I may take an instrest. With that said, I recently discovered Italian outfit Vardan, whose wide use of black metal instrumentation made me feel comfortable settling down to listen to a man vent his frustrations over a blast beat. The release that gave me that vibe was the band’s eighth album: ENJOY OF DEEP SADNESS.

Opening track ‘A Broken Existence’ has rather raw guitars, reminiscent of Sargeist and Amputator. I haven’t heard much raw DSBM, except maybe Forgotten Tomb, so I was quite impressed. The track also uses quirky 16th notes making the drums easy to follow and delivers a classic black metal grind.

‘Enjoy of Deep Sadness’ continues such rawness, but the breakdowns and melodic changes make the song slow but at a descent pace. Plus Vardan exhibits faraway backing vocals that at first made my hairs stand on end but later sounded quite comical by how hysterical they started to become. That said, it’s a good track for any fans of dread filled horror films.

And final track ‘An Abstract Voice’ is much slower and felt slightly doom metal influenced. A droning flow of guitars and drums made it quite hypnotic and the vocals mixed in to sound almost like an instrument, which will be nice for anyone who loves their shoegaze and post black metal.

Overall, I was impressed. It’s not too long or progressive an album, as such things can turn me off at face value. But this band have certainly put a lot of work into making the depressive moments of life sound as morose and angry as possible, and I congratulate them for it.
