Butchering The Beatles - A Headbashing Tribute

Released: 2006, Restless Records Rating: 2.5/5 Reviewer: Anders Sandvall This is a Beatles tribute album put together by the guitar player and producer Bob Kulick. Over 50 musicians play on this album, so it’s impossible to write a list of participants. 12 songs are covered on this album. On example is “Hey Bulldog”, sung by Alice Cooper, who brings a lot of energy to the song. He’s backed up by none other than the legendary Steve Vai on guitar. The rhythm section consists of Duff McKagen on bass and Mikkey Dee on drums. Lemmy does a brilliant cover of “Back in the USSR” where he roars his way through the heavy punk-rock version of the song. John 5 is on guitar and Eric Singer does the drums and brings heaviness to the song along with Lemmy’s bass playing and lead vocals. If you’re going to cover one of the most recognized bands in the world, you ought to have strong musicians with good ideas. This album is filled with brilliant musicians but not enough ideas; the covers follow the old songs 95% of the time, and you’d think that with such a skilled line-up it could have been done with a bit of variation. One of the fresher songs is “Day Tripper”, performed by Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw and backed up by Doug Aldrich on guitar, Marco Mendoza on bass, and Virgil Donati on drums. John Bush does a great cover of “I Feel Fine”, and Tim “Ripper” Owens contributes an excellent version of “Hey Jude”. “Magical Mystery Tour” seems to be an excuse for Yngwie Malmsteen to show off. He almost drowns out Jeff Scott Soto’s vocals and Bob Kulick, Frankie Banali, and Jeff Pilson with his guitar orgy. This album offers nothing new to the cover genre, but it’s a fun album. It’s always fun to hear great musicians do something together and transcend the genre barrier.
