VII Gates
Fire Walk With Me
July 2004
Released: 2004, Sound Riot Records
Rating: 4.2/5
Reviewer: Rick

In 2003 I reviewed the excellent demo from VII Gates called THE MADMAN INSIDE. I knew that they had all the tools to go far, it was just a matter of taking that final little step to the next level. Well here I have in front of me the new CD from VII Gates called FIRE, WALK WITH ME. And not only does the band have out their debut full length CD they have finally found a home on Portugal’s Sound Riot Records. The album was recorded at Slaughterhouse Studios in Sweden and was produced by Rickard Bengtsson of LAST TRIBE. Jon Blamire at The Digital Audio Studios mastered the album.

As on their previous work the VII Gates sound remains firmly rooted in the traditional metal arena. Actually all but 2 of these songs can be found on the bands previous demos. It is great to see these songs receive the benefit of good production. VII Gates opens the CD with a brand new song called “Bounded By Hate”. This song is very interesting in that it is a microcosm of the VII Gates sound as a whole. It is melodic yet aggressive with a touch of progressive metal thrown in for flavour. The other new song is “Second Left to Live” which is a traditional metal stomp with a blistering guitar solo from the tandem of J.J. Rockford and Basti. The older songs have also been spruced up. Most of these come from THE MADMAN INSIDE (2002) with one each coming from A DARK ROOM OF MY MIND (2001) and WHEN GATES ARE OPENING (2001). The strongest tracks being “Love Bullet” with its infectious and reworked chorus, “The Saviour” with its powermetal tilt and the 7-minute album closer “The Madman Inside”.

As I was writing this review I came across some more interesting information. Century Media has picked up this CD for distribution in North and South America. Hopefully this will mean that VII Gates will gain a bit more exposure for their brand of traditional metal. As it is FIRE, WALK WITH ME is a strong traditional metal album that sees the band taking what were already some great songs and making them even better. Their deal with Sound Riot and now their distribution deal with Century Media give VII Gates a platform to bring their brand of traditional metal to the greater metal community. Now its up to the metalheads to discover what a truly good band VII Gates really are.
