Released: 2007, Diminished Fifth Records Rating: 3.0/5 Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland While this should come as a surprise to no one, the Maritime region of Canada (the three Eastern provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, for those not up to speed on the geography of our fine country) has never exactly been known as a hotbed of heavy metal. Traditional, Celtic-based music is frequently associated with the area but Diminished Fifth Records attempts to change all that with the release of the seventeen-track compilation, THE MUSIC OF ARTISANSHIP & WAR VOLUME ONE. Corralling seventeen Maritimes’ heavy music acts on to one disc, the styles run the gamut from black metal (Hellacaust), to industrialized death metal (Bound In Human Flesh), to eighties-influenced sleaze/glam (War Pony) to nu-metal (Strong Hollow). A bit of something for everyone is offered here and while this may be a grab bag of metallic styles, the usual feeling of disconnect permeates and for every track there is to like (Gallactus’ punky sludge a la High On Fire is brilliant), there is one to dislike (metalcore doesn’t get more clichéd and formulaic than Laid To Waste’s “The Severed”). Most of the bands’ influences can be easily heard and are as far reaching as Biohazard (Rusted Dawn), System of A Down (Huge), Lamb of God (Athymia) and The New York Dolls (War Pony). At best, most of these acts will not go much further than local gigs and a MySpace following. The only real standout bands heard here are Gallactus and Pariah and even their originality can be heavily scrutinized. Good on Diminished Fifth Records for showcasing the area’s heavy music scene because the realization that the Maritimes actually HAS a metal scene instead of fiddle music and strathspeys will be a big surprise to most.
