Various Artists Order of The Tyrants-Celtic Frost Tribute
Released: 2003, Black Lotus
Oh man…another one… This is the third or fourth CF tribute? I intellectually understand why bands want to pay tribute to these avant-garde pioneers but emotionally it doesn’t make sense. I’ve always felt tributes are supposed to be interesting interpretations of the original songs so to try to do interpretations of already innovative songs to me doesn’t make sense. I suspect I’m in the minority on this one. I don’t own any of the other CF tributes so this is still good to hear.
Black Lotus delivers a gorgeous package, with a few neat features. There is a short comment from the label and a short comment from K. Chronopoulos the Editor of Metal Hammer Greece. Each band has a half page with a photo and full discography. There are no lyrics but what is a great feature is that the bands are from around the world from many labels doing many styles, it is not all just black lotus bands from Greece.
I am a fan or at very least familiar with ten of the fourteen bands on this comp. I was pleased to finally hear Melechesh doing the appropriate ‘Babylon Fell’. Bewitched’s version of the ever predictable and oft-covered ‘Circle of The tyrants’ was pedestrian. Necrophagia’s version of ‘Triumph of Death’ made me realize again what a great song that is. Dimmu’s version of Nocturnal Fear was slick and maybe predictable but extremely well executed. In a clever move the ladies of the Greek black metal band, Astarte chose to cover ‘Sorrows of The Moon’. Tacked on the end was a less popular cut, ‘Beyond The Northwinds’ by the dark techno band, Carrier Flux which was really out of place and not very enjoyable at all.
I guess I don’t need to tell you that there were no bands that covered material from Cold Lake or Vanity/Nemesis. It would have been nice to have at least ONE cover from each the under-rated releases, however. This disc with its various interpretations reinforces how progressive CF really were. Highly recommended for Black Metal fans and Celtic Frost fans but when push comes to shove, it is just another CF tribute CD.
