Released: 2004, Razorback Records Rating: 4.0/5 Reviewer: Gabriel C. Zolman Taking its conceptual cue from Relapse’s seminal Corporate Death compilation, this Razorback Records compendium oozes with grim delights. Though given a bit to overkill—there are 33 tracks in all—the collection offers a morbid overview of an excellent up-and-coming label. Outstanding cuts by perpetually consistent groups like Engorged, Machetazo, Ghoul, Impaled, Birdflesh, General Surgery, and Embalming Theatre, as well as massively underrated bands like Gigantic Brain and Fondlecorpse, make this a bargain at any price. Preview cuts of new Razorback signees like Zombie Ritual, Funerot, and the impressive Butcher ABC only add to the meat-grinding mayhem like a lapdance from a buxom zombie stripper. Even lesser lo-fi delights by Mausoleum, Kutabare, and Fuck…I’m Dead are in as fine a form as they’ve probably ever been. On the downside, one must also endure a new track from the still-awful Gore Beyond Necropsy, as well as assorted unknown ne’er-do-wells toward the tail-end of the disk. Of the unsigned lesser-blessed, only Maggut, Operating Table, and Pile Of Eggs manage to stand out among the dross. Still, at five bucks—and given the selection of truly impressive goods for the first 2/3 of the disc—no fan of death and horror can afford to pass this up.
