Vainaja, is a three man doom metal band from Finland. Taking influences from early 90's death metal and doom, they claim that their debut album "Kadotetut" is one of the heaviest records ever made in the Finnish language, or at least they claim. However, although it’s heavy, it's not quite sledge-hammer-to-the-face heavy like some bands.
The slower parts of this album are like the tail end of an acid trip. When its wearing off and all your left with is an odd sensation of feeling trippy but also horrible at the same time. Think queasy insomnia, like some kind of twisted hangover. It fits the whole doom metal aesthetic rather nicely.
After that, it gets right on into the staple diet of any doom metal fan. Heavily distorted guitars, big slow riffs crash one after the next, like the waves of depression crashing against the sea defences of your mind. At points it picks up pace only to smash on though into a screaming abyss.
