Live At Wacken 2007: 18 Years In History (DVD)
November 2008
Released: 2008, ICS/ZYX/CMM.W-Rott Rating: 5.0/5 Reviewer: Anders Sandvall Here comes a live DVD with the best moments from the 2007 Wacken Open Air Festival. WOA is the largest metal festival in the world and 2007 had 70.000 people gathered to listen to metal, drink beer and party for four days. Now you have the opportunity to take part of the festival in your own living room. WOA won the award for Festival Of The Year earlier at the Live Entertainment Awards that were held in March. The festival has a genuine history of booking bands that are on the verge of breaking through and that is one of the reasons why the festival has become so big. If you are going to Wacken you know that there are going to be lots of great and exiting band. DVD 1 The first DVD includes three documentaries that, besides a lot of music, also contain history about the festival and the work that evolves around arranging the festival. There are both interviews with the head of the festival as well as volunteers and workers on the festival. You cannot really choose which part of the documentary you’d like to see, the disc kicks off with showing the first part, but when it comes to the bands and songs you are free to choose which song you’d like to see. You can also choose if you want English subtitles or not which is recommended because the spoken language on the DVD is German. You can also choose between 2.0 audio or 5.1 audio. The documentary begins with a reporter trying to get to Wacken and along his trip he talks with people and shows performances of the bands that were playing at the festival that year. Amongst the bands that performed were Sacred Reich, Napalm Death, Sodom, Rage, Blind Guardian, Tyr, Overkill, Rose Tattoo and many others. In this segment are Saxon, Sodom and Rose Tattoo performing two songs each. It is a very informative and fun documentary to watch especially if you have been to Wacken before. It’s also a great introduction to the worlds best metal festival. There are also two shorter documentaries that cover behind the scenes and the camp life of the festival. DVD 2 The second disc includes only music and band performances from bands that played at day 2 and 3. The first disc covered highlights from only day 1. And this disc has the same menu as the first disc. You can choose to look at everything in order or to skip to the next song or event. And on this disc are bands like Therion, Possessed, Enslaved, Samael, Dimmu Borgir, Moonspell and Stormwarrior featured. However, it’s funny that the director hasn’t featured performances of the biggest bands like In Flames, Grave Digger and Turbonegro. All of the documentaries are great shot, has a great sound and picture. The disc covers 50 different acts and 65 live songs on 360 minutes. If you want more from WOA you can buy the limited edition of the DVD that includes backstage pass and a WOA patch but also 21 more live songs and two extra documentaries. The bonus disc is on 8, 5 hours, spare no expenses must have been the keyword for the makers of the DVD. This is an excellent DVD for all you out there who wants to dig deep into the WOA history or who is thinking of going to Wacken next year. Next year celebrates WOA 20 years as a festival and I wonder how the festival general are gonna celebrate that. I can strongly recommend this DVD to any metal fans. http://www.zyx.de http://www.cmm.w.rott.com ![]()
