Urn
Soul Destroyers
July 2008
Released: 2008, Dynamic Arts Records Rating: 4.0/5 Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen The Finnish blackened thrashers, Urn, have decided to come and complete their mission to destroy all of our souls on their 3rd full-length opus, aptly titled SOUL DESTROYERS, for good. As background information for all of you who didn´t know this before, the band has been around since 1994, made a couple of albums (666 MEGATONS in 2001 and DAWN OF THE DEVASTATION in 2006), toured widely across Europe with such names as Carpathian Forest, Sabbat, Nifelheim, Deströyer 666 and Adorior. Now did all this make you at least a bit curious to read further about them? Good... What Urn offer on SOUL DESTROYERS, is a true thrash-blast in the name of old school times - reminding of the mighty Possessed here and there, even pretty strongly at times - but with a more thrashy feeling. It´s not only the music that harks back to that ancient feeling that Possessed once had, but also the band´s venom spitter, Sulphur has a similar tone in his voice to Jeff Becerra´s. At times he really manages to trick listeners to believe he could be Mr. Becerra himself. However, Urn´s blackened and harsh sounding thrash flows really well and irresistibly through all the ten songs they have recorded for SOUL DESTROYERS; the kind of black-ish thrash which I have always loved more than my neighbor´s ugly, fat and rude grandma (R.I.P. though). Songs like "War and Victory" (sounds deceptively like one Legion of the Damned song, duh!), "Blood of the Desecrators", "Decibel Hellstorm", "Soul Destroyers" - and just like all the other songs on SOUL DESTROYERS, simply rip and shred - and make all the fans of blackened thrash (Desaster, Deströyer 666, Gospel of the Horns, etc. - anyone?) pleased about what they are about to get: 10 totally annihilating songs, full of true wickedness and old school underground metal in 46 minutes. If this doesn´t make you happy, then I´m sorry to say that your missing head is the only thing that can be accepted to be a part of this game. Urn did impress the hell out of me on SOUL DESTROYERS, most definitely! One of the few remaining torch bearers of the ancient and wicked underground metal sound and feeling deserves your support too, fuckers! Crush! Kill! Destroy! Expect only headbanging metal madness! Yep, that´s right - metal madness indeed... ![]()
