Live From Russia
Released: 2001, n/a
Everyone knows the name UDO Dirkschneider. He is the legendary lead singer for German metal icons Accept and also the leader of his own band U.D.O. As the lead screamer for Accept Udo sold millions of copies of albums such as BALLS TO THE WALL and METAL HEART and gave the metal world some great tunes like "Fast as a Shark" and "Breaker". After the break up of Accept Udo formed his own band U.D.O. The first CD they released was ANIMAL HOUSE in 1988 which was a solid disc that even garnered some video play for the song "They Want War". This was followed by the equally great MEAN MACHINE, FACELESS WORLD and TIMEBOMB Accept reunited in 1993 and went on to release OBJECTION OVERRULED and DEATH ROW. In 1995 U.D.O. released what was supposed to be their farewell disc PREDATOR. It wasn't long before Udo was feeling the metal itch and reformed the band. The following CDs, SOLID and NO LIMITS did pretty well for the band and allowed them to tour widely. These tours were capped off by triumphant performance at 1999's Wacken Open Air Festival. On the heels of this success U.D.O. released their most successful CD to date, HOLY.
Well the tiny man with the big voice is back with a live album that contains songs that run the gamut from his work with Accept up to his latest U.D.O. studio album HOLY. LIVE IN RUSSIA is a 2 disc set that is chock full of great metal. U.D.O. has even managed to include some Accept tunes that are available live for the first time. Disc one kicks off with the title track from U.D.O.’s last disc HOLY. This is a great driving metal song. It is a followed by track 2 from the HOLY album "Raiders of Beyond". Udo then dips back into his Accept past and kicks out the lead off single from METAL HEART, "Midnight Mover". One of my favourite Accept tracks. Disc one also contains other such notable tracks as "Animal House" from U.D.O.’s debut release, "Metal Eater" from TIME BOMB and some of the aforementioned first live recordings of "Winter Dreams" from Accept’s BALLS TO THE WALL and the lead of track to RUSSIAN ROULETTE ,"TV War".
Disc 2 picks up right where Disc 1 leaves off. U.D.O. plays a mixture of their own material and Accept songs. Again some Accept songs make an appearance that have never been released live before. "Heaven and Hell" from RUSSIAN ROULETTE and "I’m a Rebel" from the 1980 album of the same name. Udo attacks this particular song with a voraciousness that belies the fact that it is 21 years old. Other standout tracks on Disc 2 are "Break The Rules" from the second U.D.O. disc MEAN MACHINE, the AC/DCish "Midnight Highway" from Accept’s BREAKER disc and the album closer and possibly greatest U.D.O. track "They Want War".
U.D.O. is a band that doesn’t get the recognition that they deserve. The driving force behind the band is of course the mighty mite Udo Dirkschneider but he has surrounded himself with a great band. Stefan Kaufman: guitar, Igor Gianola: guitar, Fitty Wienhold: bass and Lorenzo Milani: drums. After 7 albums its about time that this band released some great live music on the metal masses.
