Ulcerate
The Destroyers of All
March 2011
Released: 2011, Willowtip Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Demonator

If over the past few years, you've dared to venture further afield than Europe or North America for you heavy metal fix, you'd no doubt have discovered the makings of a particularly buoyant scene simmering in the land down under. Spearheaded by acerbic upstarts like Destroyer 666 and The Amenta, Australia's underground movement is noteworthy as much for its exponents unique antipodean character as its no-BS brutality.

Like most of their storied rivalries, New Zealand have shown an increased appetite in recent years to prevent their neighbors from running away with all the plaudits. Dawn of Azazel leads the Kiwi charge; less publicly celebrated, but perhaps even more potent is Ulcerate. Based out of Auckland, THE DESTROYERS OF ALL is their third full length foray and for anyone familiar with their previous work, it presents a genuine refinement of the ambient Meshuggah-meets-Immolation barrage of yesteryear. Songs are notably longer and more dynamic, the likes of "Dead Oceans" and "Beneath" weaving progressively through a myriad of oppressive, ferocious licks that span the dissonant to the genuinely tuneful. Indeed "Omens" displays all the sombre qualities of a Alejandro González Iñárritu film's soundtrack, gradually building toward a bludgeoning crescendo that delivers brutality and unease in equal measure.

It's heady stuff for sure and by the time the marathon title track arrives to sign off the record, some may find themselves mentally exhausted by it all. Those that don't will feel as though they've discovered perhaps the one band that can out-dark Triptykon. Minus Thomas Fisher's narcissism.
