U.N.S.I.N. is a female fronted, Greek 4-piece currently supporting their debut EP, 0154. The name U.N.S.I.N. is an acronym for “United Nation Substance Identification Number” and 0154 is the U.N.S.I.N. code for Picric acid (an explosive). Makes sense? Doesn’t have to, because the music here does, and that’s all that matters.
The band combines elements of hard rock, melodic traditional metal, and little bits of here and there thrown in for balance. Most of the musical focus on 0154 Is on vocalist Christina Nikolaidou and guitarist Spyros Pafilis, and the interplay between the two. Nikolaidou has an amazing voice, it’s on par with the Amy Lee’s and the Lacey Sturm’s of the world, but with more power, range and character. The songs are well put together and wouldn’t feel out of place on mainstream rock radio, particularly the EP opener “Acid.” “The Show” has some darker crunch to it and some beautiful vocal layering, while “Unseen” is the most traditionally metal tune of the batch. It’s got a dirty swagger to it that comes off as mean and sexy at the same time. “Up” closes the EP and is the most commercial sounding tune of the four included here.
Musically the rest of the band sounds pretty capable. Guitarist Spyros Pafilis’ riffs are pretty straightforward, but varied enough to keep it interesting. The rhythm section of Ted and George (apparently not important enough to have their last names included in the promo material or website), keep the backend together, but are generally in left in the shadows. Production wise, 0154 sounds clean and professional grade, and lends the tunes some added credibility.
I was wary of another chick-fronted metal outfit, but I was really impressed with U.N.S.I.N. The EP is intended to be a teaser of bigger things to come from the band, and it works. I’d love to hear more from U.N.S.I.N. The songs are strong and the performances are top notch. What more can you ask for? Check out the band’s website for a pro-shot video for “Acid” and more info on 0154.
