Ted Nugent
Shutup&Jam!
August 2014
Released: 2014, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

With a recording career spanning nearly 50 years, the immutable Ted Nugent just keeps on rockin’. The aptly-titled SHUTUP&JAM! is the man’s 14th solo album, but his first in seven years. Love him or hate him (and there are plenty on both sides!), Uncle Ted just keeps on doing his thing and you have to respect that.

On to the music, SHUTUP&JAM! is easily one of Nugent’s best albums since his late’70’s heyday. While there are no surprises offered up, Ted’s made sure that this is one of his heaviest, most energetic albums ever, with only the album-ending blues ballad ratcheting down and mellowing out. The remaining twelve songs kick all kinds of ass and are as raw and in your face as we’ve come to expect from the ‘Nuge. Musically, Ted is still at the top of his game and he doesn’t hesitate to prove it with wild instrumental “Throttledown”. Vocally, he takes the lion’s share of tracks, with long-time sideman Derek St. Holmes only taking the mic for one song (“Everything Matters”). You kinda wish that St. Holmes got more air time, but Nugent’s vocals don’t disappoint. The Red Rocker himself, Sammy Hagar, shows up to duet with Nugent on “She’s Gone”.

Ted still loves rock ‘n roll and he delivers that in spades here. I honestly don’t think there’s a bad song in this bunch, but your mileage will vary depending on your tolerance for Nugent’s views (espoused handily as usual). That said, SHUTUP&JAM! is a hell of a record, proving that Ted Nugent is as viable and entertaining a hard rock force as ever.
