Thy Disease
Extreme Obesession Live (DVD)
February 2005
Released: 2004, Music Video Distributors/Metal Mind
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Thy Disease is a young band that formed in Krakow in 1999. They’ve been honing their craft since that time, and have slowly been building interest in the band throughout Europe, with 2 full-length releases (DEVILISH ACT OF CREATION, COLD SKIN OBSESSION), apparently enough interest to warrant the release of this DVD. This is my first contact with the band, and after watching this DVD all the way through, I can’t say that I’m inclined to go out and buy their albums. That’s not to say that Thy Disease is a bad band, because they’re not. However, their music is blackened death metal, with extreme leanings (to be kind) towards Dimmu Borgir. Nothing too original I’m afraid.

Anyhoo, the DVD itself is a nice package, including a full-length live show, 6 demo/rare tracks, a video clip for the song “Perfect Form”, and a (short) interview with the band. The live show footage is very well shot, clear in both picture and sound. The band sounds great running through their songs, with standouts being “Perfect Form”, Ultimate Reign” and their reworking of the theme from “Last of the Mohicans”, where they turn it into an all-out death/thrash assault. Very cool.

Two things drag the show down though: a VERY dead crowd that barely moves or reacts throughout the entire show, and a lack of stage presence from the band. They’re very young-looking so I’m guessing that they haven’t played too many gigs, but they definitely need to work on their presentation a bit.

The interview isn’t all too revealing or insightful, and the audio tracks aren’t much to write home about either. The cover of Madonna’s “Frozen” is interesting to say the least. Overall this is a pretty good package, but it could be better. For fans of the band, this is a must buy, but everyone else should probably check out an album first, if this sounds like it might be your thing.
