To many, this band will be lumped into the happy power metal category. And, in fact, it is written and performed in that style. THUNDERSTONE reminds me a STRATOVARIUS in their "Visions" and "Destiny" (1997-1998) incarnation. And this is good!

I was very impressed with the previous album "The Burning". This one is a slight step down from its predecessor in the sense that many of the tracks seem to simply play off the tracks from the previous album. In fact, some of the better tracks such as "Tool of the Devil" and "I will come again" could easily have been on "The Burning".

Sure, there are lots of keyboards, the tracks are fast, the melodies catchy, and some of the guitar solos are blazing. The vocalist is not confined to falsetto wailing, and the songs have staying power. Like the previous album, the tracks are well constructed and there is a wide variety in tempo and style ranging from speed metal, to some mid paced riff hard rock/metal, to ballads. This is clearly a modern metal CD (not "nu"!) with strong production and not likely to win over any pure old-school fans.

But the bottom line is that this is just a solid CD and I am interested in seeing this band live sometime. I find that it stands above most of the routine "power metal" material flooding the scene today.
