Toby Knapp is the ambitious mastermind responsible of such underground greats as Waxen, Darken, and the best kept secret from Century Media's early millennial roster, Onward. Toby is also a very respected and noteworthy guitarist in shredder circles, having blazed a trail as a solo artist, both early on in his career and presently, as he continues to release solo album's in addition to his regular axeslinger duties in Godless Rising.
On THE CAMPAIGN, Toby offers up nine fresh and unique tracks. Diversity is key on this album, there are all kinds of different feels and textures from the melodic riffage of album opener "The Campaign" to the death metal brutality of "We Are Legions" to the more hard rockin output of "Wicked".
There are some instrumental numbers up for offer here, which is perfectly OK as Toby is always the center of the listener's attention, but there are also some pretty cool guest appearances that come in the form of Dean Sternberg (Into Eternity)Jeff Gruslin (Godless Rising, Vital Remains)and Attila Csihar (Mayhem)who I believe offers up the most interesting collaboration. It's worth mentioning that a few years back, Toby Knapp came close to joining the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem, so this may be as close as we will ever get to hearing the fruition of what could have been from that kind of unholy union.
Toby Knapp never disappoints and I find many of his albums continuing to warrant many repeated listens. THE CAMPAIGN is a safe bet in that regard, though as not as consistent in style as any of his other projects I am aware of, the diversity can be appreciated for what it truly is, Toby handpicking and assembling the right voice for the right songs.
1. The Campaign
3. Towards Power Unimagined
4. We Are Legions
8. Plutonium Race
9. Lack of Inspiration
