Three Lions
Three Lions
August 2014
Released: 2014, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Love them or hate them, melodic hard rock bands just keep coming out of the woodwork, despite the genre’s commercial “death” way back in the early 1990’s. Three Lions is one of the latest in these groups, formed by two ex-Dare, and Ten, members (Vinny Burns, Greg Morgan), along with newcomer Nigel Bailey. At least two of the trio have deep pedigree in rock music, so Three Lions’ carries the weight of a lot of promise.

Fortunately, this self-titled debut more than lives up to expectations as it’s chock full of outstanding melodic hard rock. Lead off track “Trouble in a Red Dress” sets the tone with a highly memorable chorus and powerful guitar riffs, redolent of Ten. However, it’s new man Bailey that instantly impresses with a powerful voice that in more sympathetic musical times could have taken this band platinum multiple times.

The album then energetically moves through the expected, with ballads, Eastern music influences, and scorching rockers. A few songs in the middle of the album get a bit too saccharine, but the album is peppered with soulful songs like “Winter Sun” and true rockers like “Hellfire Highway” to balance things.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect out of Three Lions and was actually somewhat unimpressed on my first play through. But starting with my second listen I was hooked, and the album just keeps sounding better the more I listen to it. Hopefully this turns out to be more than a one-off project and we get more awesome music from these guys.
