This is not metal. I don’t know what the hell it is, but it’s definitely not metal.



Trey Gunn is a guitarist and keyboardist whose claim to fame, according to press materials, is the “Warr Guitar.” That is a “revolutionary new instrument [which] is an eight or ten stringed guitar with the range of a piano and is played by tapping the strings.” That’s all fine and good, but if he can’t do any good metal with it, then it’s no concern of Metal-Rules.com. UNTUNE THE SKY is an interesting disc full of progressive electronic music. Some is slow and weepy, some is weird European “Shprockets” type stuff, and some is even vaguely danceable. But there are no riffs, there is no speed, there is no aggression and there’s just simply no metal. Lots of keyboards and some weird twanging that I assume must be the “Warr Guitar,” but nothing I could confidently call heavy metal, nor even close. Then again you would not expect an album with a track called “Hootenanny at the Pink Pussycat Café” to be a metal album.



I doubt Trey Gunn has any ambition to play metal. If he does, his music needs a lot of work. I’m not sure why this was sent to Metal-Rules.com, but it gets very low marks on the metal scale.
