Only The Strong (Reissue)
June 2014
Released: 2014, Deadline
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: JP

When I’m reviewing this Thor reissue I’m in a bit of a predicament. Last November (2013) as part of our 40th Anniversary celebration of the mighty Thor, I reviewed ONLY THE STRONG and gave it a perfect score. How do you go up from there? This new version of, what most consider to be Thor’s best album, has been reissued and it is excellent. This album has been reissued on CD at least three times previously but this is the best version I have seen. I’ll keep the review short, again, one of my public service announcements to explain the re-release. If you want a full review of the album proper, please read my original review here at

This time the respected Deadline/Cleopatra Records have the honour of reissuing this iconic album. They have presented a nice, glossy, fold-out double digipak that houses the two discs and booklet. The booklet is a 16 page booklet in full colour with over 20 photos of Thor from that era. There is a long essay by industry veteran Dave Thompson. In addition to the original album there are no less than 11 bonus tracks. We get to hear five demo songs from the 80’s, two live tracks from England in 1984 and for some reason four songs from the Edge Of Hell Soundtrack, which doesn’t seem necessary to me.

The second disc is a DVD called ONLY THE STRONGEST. It runs for 55 minutes and has fairly simple production values. The content is essentially bootleg footage of Thor and his stage show from roughly 1982-1984. The shows were recorded in England, Canada and America at various locations. There is not much in a way of a menu to navigate through, it is bare bones, but still very cool to see this old footage. The footage itself ranges from bad to worse but it gives us a fine glimpse into the past, 30 years ago. The key point is that Thor put on a show! Dancers, a dwarf, the infamous hot-water bottle stunt, Thor getting bricks smashed on his chest and various feats of strength, it was an event that many young bands could learn from. The last clip is Thor and the boys hanging around on the bus in England goofing around and enjoying the moment.

It is good to see this classic album given the treatment it deserves. ONLY THE STRONG is now stronger than ever!
