Theatre Of Tragedy
Released: 2006, AFM Records/Sound Pollution
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall
Theatre of Tragedy is a Norwegian gothic metal act. It’s been four years since the world last heard from them with their album ASSEMBLY featuring their now ex-singer Liv Kristine behind the mic. Today it's Nell that handles the voice and TOT lies exactly right in time with their gothic metal music. Their music is played with enormous strength and depth. The only thing that's possibly not to their benefit is that the music sometimes sounds a bit too commercial maybe.
The band has handled the loss of Liv Kristine, who left 3 years ago on a positive note, and newcomer Nell takes on the task in a brilliant way. She has an amazing voice with a genuine feeling for the music. The only thing that's a bit annoying is the co-vocalist Raymond I. Rohonyi who chants and whispers his parts towards Nell and it doesn't sound too good when he comes in.
The material on STORM feels worked-through and adjusts to Nell's voice and I can't find any bad track on the entire album. Every element that defines gothic metal is brought along: darkness and sadness; and nothing has been left behind when it comes to the finished product. The band had a lot to prove when it came to entering the studio without Liv Kristine, because she was almost the essence of what TOT are, after all. Older fans are not going to be disappointed when they put on STORM, and I'm sure that a new generation is going to take part and grow up with TOT’s excellent gothic metal. It's a strong album and it's a must for every person who calls themselves goth!.
