“Thor, The Mighty! Thor, The Brave! Crush the infidels in your way.” (Manowar, 1984)

Before Iron Maiden. Before Metallica. Before Slayer. Even before Manowar… there was THOR! In 1973, a young musician records his first demo/single in Vancouver, Canada what was to become the germination of ‘Body Rock’, and the eventual evolution into one of Metal mightiest warriors and most prolific and enduring acts...THE MIGHTY THOR! In celebration of his 40th anniversary and in tribute to Canada’s longest running Metal band, I am very proud to present short reviews of 13 releases from across his career. Feel free to enjoy all the reviews in this feature including…

Thor follows up his monster debut with somewhat of a sedated move, the release of the UNCHAINED EP. Originally released in six tracks, it was later reissued with four bonus tracks and then again with one more bonus track. Having six years between your debut album and follow-up , an EP no less, could be career suicide for a young artists but it may have been a last ditch attempt. Whatever the reason, it worked and the EP caught some attention and lead to bigger things. Highlight on the original is ‘Anger’ which has become a staple of Thor catalogue and found itself redone years later on the TRIUMPHANT album. Another couple of tracks, ‘Rock The City’ and ‘When Gods Collide’ later made it onto his next record, ONLY THE STRONG. In terms of execution of UNCHAINED, Thor was very much a contemporary of Manowar, Virgin Steele, Riot and other early US Metal acts on the East Coast. A highlight for me was the instrumental ‘Death March’, mostly a guitar solo to close the original EP. Unfortunately like much of the reissued Thor catalogue, there is no info on the bonus tracks and they made a poor choice to change the cover art. As it stands UNCHAINED was a welcome comeback for Thor.
