“Thor, The Mighty! Thor, The Brave! Crush the infidels in your way.” (Manowar, 1984)

Before Iron Maiden. Before Metallica. Before Slayer. Even before Manowar… there was THOR! In 1973, a young musician records his first demo/single in Vancouver, Canada what was to become the germination of ‘Body Rock’, and the eventual evolution into one of Metal mightiest warriors and most prolific and enduring acts...THE MIGHTY THOR! In celebration of his 40th anniversary and in tribute to Canada’s longest running Metal band, I am very proud to present short reviews of 13 releases from across his career. Feel free to enjoy all the reviews in this feature including…

-Keep The Dogs Away (1977)

-Unchained (1983)

-Only The Strong (1985)

-Live In Detroit (1985)

-Anthorology (1997)

-Thunderstruck (1998)

-Dogz II (2001)

-Mutant (2003)

-Beastwomen From The Center of The Earth (2004)

-Thor Against The World (2005)

-Rock And Roll Nightmare (2006)

-Into The Noise (2008)

-Thunderstryke (2012)

This is one of Thor’s most recent releases and is one of a handful of compilations he has released. Rest assured this is not just a generic ‘Best Of’ or ‘Greatest Hits’ but an excellent collection of rarities.

The packaging of THUNDERSTRYKE is very good lots of nice pictures and liner notes…however…again like ANTHOROLOGY there is a painful lack of description about when and where these songs were recorded! This 51 minute, 15 track album has tons of great music, but it is very frustrating. The only real point in releasing these types of collections to gather up all the ‘scraps’ for the fans and explain what they are and where they came from! As it stands, this is almost like a brand new THOR album because other than a liner note that says the songs were recorded between 1976 and 2012, there is nothing to go on.

The sound is great, well produced and mixed. If you listen carefully and are a true Rock warrior and Thor disciple you can roughly approximate which eras each songs is from. There are spoken word parts, some heavy keyboard influenced songs, like ‘Megaton Man’. There are some straight up rockers like ‘High Times’ with Frank Soda on lead vocals and pounding Metal anthems such as ‘Metal Warriors’. There is even a solid cover of Zep’s ‘Rock And Roll’!

When all is said and done, when it comes to ranking the THOR Compilations, this is better than ANTHOROLOGY but not as good as MUTANT. Worth it for THOR fans of course but others may want to choose wisely and get some classic studio albums instead.
