Noctambulant - Noc•tam•bu•lant – adjective, walking by night

The Noctambulant – Jacksonville, FL based black metal aficionados

The spawn of scene vets Eddie Helvete and D. Franseth, The Noctambulant is a Jacksonville, Florida based black metal outfit currently supporting their sophomore EP THE FEAR LEADER. Despite their bright and sunny surroundings, The Noctambulant drive a convincing brand of modern black metal that lives comfortably between the gritty ugliness of Acheron and the grand designs of Dimmu Borgir. Though the EP is a scant 3 tracks and an intro, it’s a progressive leap beyond their DREAMS OF ROTTEN SILENCE DEBUT and hints at what this foursome is truly capable of.

“The Stirring of Old Gods” opens the EP with fleeting moments of harmony, intended only to preface you for “Death’s Lullaby”. The track employs an attitude of stripped down bleak nihilism that’s buoyed by a wall of dense guitars and a visceral melodious underbelly. “Creeping Dead” is a measured, mid-tempo trudge through the netherwold that attempts to build some brood and apprehension, but “Blood For Life” is arguably the most impressive track of the lot. Opting for a less refined, punkier approach (think DEATHCRUSH), the track gleefully runs rampant, introducing the occasional off kilt guitar run and some ominous vocal layers.

Here’s the thing. I really enjoyed what THE FEAR LEADER offers up, but it’s over way too quick. The three core tracks on the EP all embody their own personality and style, but it’s tough to gauge whether it’s independent dumb luck that makes the whole thing work or if there’s really a larger strategy at hand (I’ll play devil’s advocate and argue the latter vs. the former). Regardless, The Noctambulant presents a promising offering to the Dark Lord with THE FEAR LEADER, and hopefully will provide enough support to drive a proper full length release sooner than later. THE FEAR LEADER should be available for purchase by the time you read this, but check out The Noctambulant Facebook page for more details.
