The Haunting Presence
Released: 2014, Indie

I was unfamiliar with this new project by one-man black meal master THP-SOH before being asked to review this release for Metal-Rules, but I was happy to check it out, as it looked like something that would be right up my alley. THP-SOH has already gained notoriety in the doomy black metal scene for his solo project Nocturnal Blood, but this offering is even more personal, intense and grating. However, unlike a lot of Avant-garde black metal, it is also catchy, thrashy, and listenable, making for an awesome and unlikely combination.
This debut, self-titled album is six tracks long, and each offering on the album is super solid. It opens up with the very brief but sludgy intro “Deity of Darkness,” transitions into a few longer and more fleshed-out tracks, my favorite of which is the soul-crushing “Continuously Assaulted by Spirits,” and keeps up the theme with an outro entitled “The Deity of Destruction.” The music is very dark and angry-sounding, but closer to Dark Throne or even Venom than a lot of the spacier and trippier modern black metal that is out today. I have not gotten my hands on a physical copy of the album yet, but black-and-white cover art is intricate and very dismal, and my guess is there will be some cool bells and whistles thrown in if you buy the vinyl that was released last month.
I would recommend this album to a wide variety of metal fans, from the die-hard black metal purists to those who like genre blurring and black metal experimentation. This is raw, D.I.Y. and rocking, so if you only like super-polished sounding tech death you may not appreciate the fidelity of this recording. For all other metal fans, however, this should be a lot of fun.
