The Lord Weird Slough Feg
The Traveller
June 2003
Released: 2003, Dragonheart Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Rick

What a strange name for a band. Not only is it a strange name but it gives no indication of what type of music that this band plays. THE TRAVELLER came in the mail to me but I didn’t have a chance to look at it and not knowing anything about the band it got pushed aside for a bit. It caught my attention the other night and I am glad it did. The Lord Weird Slough Feg play what they call “majestic, mind control metal”. I don’t know what they actually mean but that tag but they certainly got the majestic and metal parts right. Now I ain’t talking majestic like Rhapsody. This is more in the Iron Maiden classic metal tradition. The name The Lord Weird Slough Feg, is derived from a character in ancient Irish mythology . Those myths, as recounted in the historical tome known as the Ta'in Bo Cuailgne (thawn bo quel'gny). The band is a 4 piece which includes Mike Scalzi :vocals & guitar, Greg Haa: drums, John Cobbett: guitar, Adrian Maestas:Bass.

The disc opens with the obligatory intro called “The Spinward Marches” which is flowed by the pounding traditional track “High Passage/Low Passage”. In the past the band has called themselves Celtic Metal and Barbarian Metal and the Celtic influences bleed though slightly on this NWOBHM influenced tune. “Asteroid Belts” jacks up the tempo as double bass pounds the listener into the next universe. This leads me to my next observation. This is a concept CD. Outside of dealing with space I don’t quite know the details of the concept because the promo version of the CD that I have didn’t include any lyrics or even a tear sheet with band info.
