The Mighty Nimbus
S/T
July 2005
Released: 2005, Candlelight
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: MetalGeorge

Minnesota’s The Mighty Nimbus have released an outstanding monolith of Stoner/Doom here with their self-titled debut. With balls to spare, these good ‘ol boys rawk out in a fashion which is timeless, reminiscent of some of Saint Vitus’ best moments, tempered with the vicious aggression of modern day metal.

With varying tempos and moods, each track here possesses it’s own unique feel and vibe. From up-tempo, bluesy rockers, to the depths of grinding depression, The Mighty Nimbus have something for the boozehounds in all of us. Featuring members of fellow Stoner gods Alabama Thunderpussy, ‘da Nimbus’ true strength lies within the sum of it’s parts. Each member of the band is essential, and each command his instrument with astonishing skill.

The vocals of Dan Soren are at once desperate, brutal, and soulful, driving each song to the brink, before bringing it back with a powerful presence which rivals some of the best out there right now. Guitarists Minnesota Pete and Erik Larson succeed in creating some hair-raising moments with their grooving riffing and excellent and tasteful lead work, while drummer Andy Campbell pushes each song ever forward, even indulging in some cow bell here and there!

Probably the most impressive Stoner debut I’ve heard since Sweden’s Witchcraft, The Mighty Nimbus have something big on their hands, and I personally can’t wait to hear what comes next. Don’t pass this one up, folks.
